Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Flesch Reading Ease score?

The Flesch Reading Ease test rates text on a 0-100 scale. Higher scores mean the text is easier to read. A score of 60-70 is considered standard and appropriate for most web content. The formula is: 206.835 - 1.015(total words/total sentences) - 84.6(total syllables/total words).

What readability score should I aim for?

For most web content and blogs, aim for a Flesch score of 60-70 (8th-9th grade level). This is readable by the majority of your audience. Technical content can be 40-60. Mass-market content should target 70-80.

Does readability affect SEO rankings?

Google has confirmed that user experience signals like dwell time and bounce rate affect rankings. Readable content keeps users engaged longer, reducing bounce rate. While readability is not a direct ranking factor, its impact on user behavior makes it indirectly important for SEO.

What is the Gunning Fog Index?

The Gunning Fog Index estimates the years of formal education needed to understand text on first reading. A score of 12 means high school senior level. Most popular publications aim for a Fog Index of 7-8. The formula is: 0.4 * [(words/sentences) + 100 * (complex words/words)].

How are syllables counted?

We use an algorithmic approach: count vowel groups in each word. Each vowel group counts as one syllable. Words ending in 'e' (silent) are adjusted. This is approximately 95% accurate compared to dictionary syllable counts.

Can I use this for client work?

Absolutely. Use the readability scorer to audit client content before publishing. Share the scores with clients to demonstrate the quality of your content optimization. All results are yours to use freely.
